| 'The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales', 18/06/08 "Its almost enough to make you beleive in Albion again" You've got to feel for libertines fans. After investing thier hearts in the craic and chaos of that band, they've had to endure Pete's troubles and,um,Dirty pretty things, all without the tunes that made the libs worth the effort. Thanks to former bassist John Hassall, respite is now at hand. After lengthy legal shenanigans,Hassall's portfolio of fine songwriting has at last made it through the red tape. Evidence of such can be found in the epic, mariachi-infused single "Don't go back to the one you love", and the La's-esque jangle of "Never lose your sense of wonder". It's almost enough to make you belive in Albion again. | ||||

| John Hassall interview in NME | 484 Tage her | |||
| Former Libertines bassist John Hassall has revealed why he chose to record two 'lost' Libs songs with his new band Yeti and why Pete Doherty used to call him "Jesus" on tour. The recently released " The Legend of Yeti Gonzales" features two songs,'Sister Sister' and 'Merry Go Round' that Hassall wrote while he was still in the Libertines. The former was oringinally recorded during the bands 'Legs 11' demo sessions in September 2000, with Hassall on Vocals. The latter was never played or recorded by Doherty and co (although Babyshambles have a song of the same title), but was written while Hassall was touring with the band in 2004. The Singer/guitarist told NME that the downbeat,'Merry go Round' was his attempt to capture the melanchonic nature of being on the road, feeling lonely despite being surrounded by people all the time. "It was a wonderful thing,being on tour," he explained. "You feel incredibly happy but at the same time it's quite a melanchonic experience, just passing through places and never stopping. There is a sadness there." Hassall joked that touring with Yeti is "a lot more civilised" than being on the road with his former band, and revealed that Pete Doherty and Carl Barat used to call him "Jesus" because, being a practising Buddhist, he would under take religious chanting on the tourbus while his bandmates enjoyed raucous rock antics. "They were very understanding about me doing it on the bus," he recalled. "They did call me'Jesus' but it was in a funny good-natured way." Talking about the break-up of the Libertines in 2004, after they played thier final gig in Paris without Pete Doherty, Hassall said it was a difficult time for him, but he belived that dissolving the band was the right thing to do. "It was a sad place for us," he said, " but i think it was the end of the cycle." He said he is on good terms with his former bandmates. "I went to see Carl and gary play the other day he explained. "I haven't seen Peter for ages but i do communicate with him sometimes. I think of them all as really good mates." Hassall was cagey about a possible reunion, but refuesd to rule it out. "Most importantly, we have a good friendship," he said. "after that it kind of depends really...." Where have Yeti been? Despite forming in 2004, Yeti-Hassall on bass, Mark Underwood on acoustic guitar, Adnrew Deian cannes on electric guitar and Graham Blacow on drums- have only just released thier debut album. What took them so long ? "Um... I guess we came up against resistance, internally and externally," Hassall mumbled, refusing to be drawn on details- suggesting that life in Yeti could be as turbulent as it was in the Libs. " But we've grown through that-that band has changed a lot. And the second album is written already!" | ||||

| Finally our long-awaited debut album “The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales” will be released on June 23, and it can be found at the usual places. Amazon and Recordstore are all doing special pre-order deals, with Amazon ahead of the pack at 6.98 quid per copy (Amazon have now sold-out so please try the indies instead unless you want to wait three weeks). How they manage to make a profit at these prices we don’t know, maybe it’s a just pride thing? TRACK LIST: 01 OBVIOUSLY Jangle-jangle. This is the jangliest song possible. 02 DON’T GO BACK TO THE ONE YOU LOVE “Turn the lights out, shut the window, burn your old clothes, don’t use the telephone…Steal the next car, drive to Mexico.” Windy drama from the Mexican border. Listen out for Graham’s whistling. Video’s on YOUTUBE. 03 TIL THE WEEKEND COMES The Anti-Weekend song. All these hip bands wanna big up and brag about their weekends. Buffoons! Anyway, isn’t Wednesday the new Friday? Is the Pope black? 04 MERRY GO ROUND “Me I’m just a stranger, but here they know my name. Paid to see the madman in a shiny cage.” Tales from the Van, as they say. 05 IN LIKE WITH YOU “True baby true, I’m in like with you, but don’t ask me if I love you ‘cos I wouldn’t want to lie to you.” The Anti-Love song. As in the feeling, not the band (the good one, not The Feeling). 06 SHANE MACGOWAN Roots music with a legendary title. Texan-esque ELO ending. 07 MIDNIGHT FLIGHT “I wake up in the morning and I think it’s just a dream But then I see the bodies on my tiny TV screen I put my bloodstained clothing in my washing machine And it cleanses my senses of the horrors that they’ve seen.” 08 JERMYN GIRLS “There’s no coming down - not when you get so high You see the Jermyn Girls - live in a distant world.” True story. If someone offers you drugs on Greek Street, Soho, it’s gonna be a tissue ball. 09 NEVER LOSE YOUR SENSE OF WONDER One day this song will be in an ad for some fizzy drink or chewing gum in a foreign country. Preferably Brazil, so we can use the Portuguese samba version. 10 REPRISE Part 2 of Track 2. Yeti goes semi-prog. It’s what happens if you let the tape run. 11 CAN’T PRETEND This is the summer in the basement song. Recorded at 4am. And it’s in Mono! 12 SISTER SISTER “Hold on tighter to the friends that you made in the life that you once knew.” 13 THE LAST TIME YOU GO (6 FEET UNDER) “Six feet underground, never to be found This will be the last time that you go.” Don’t mess with Yeti, okay? 14 WHO IS GONZALES ??? Buy the album and find out. It’s the one after 909. The album will also be available on iTunes (worldwide) and other download sites. Pre-order now at HMV, CARGO RECORDS or RECORDSTORE. Please support the indie stores, they are far more efficient for the smaller labels and will dispatch the order far quicker. For those outside of the UK you can either order from iTunes or from one of the UK indie stores like Rough Trade, Norman Records, Cargo Records etc. Sincerest, Yeti Secretary | ||||

| Don't Go Back To The One You Love: Single Review | 528 Tage her | |||
Don't Go Back To The One You Love, 02/06/08 "A wolf whistling, guitar-churning chant, with a soul straight out of the wild old west...." Beautiful, elusive Yeti! Creeping through the blurred focus forest of the indie consciousness, sparsely presenting their heartfelt and carefully crafted wares before the lucky, trembling lens of the discerning gig-goer. Having spent much of the two years being almost as difficult to track down as their namesake, John Hassall & co are well and truly back in public view, still easing in to their refreshed line-up, ringing in their new album in a parade of trumpets and jubilant vocals and reminding us all that there were always more talents than egos in the Libertines. 'Don't Go Back To The One You Love' is a wolf whistling, guitar-churning chant, with a soul straight out of the wild old west, combining heavy drum fills, battling guitars and unabashed mariachi brass to stake out the surprisingly fertile sonic meeting ground between The Raconteurs and The Coral. Whilst this single may not be particularly distinctive, with its layers and lilts, it is complex enough to be intriguing, yet low-key enough to be easily listenable. In all, a perfectly passable spring time sing along and a suitable dangling carrot to the pending album. By Carla Washbourne

| The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales: Album review | 533 Tage her | |||
The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales, 23.06.08 "A damn fine album to kick back to..." Judging by 75% of ex-libertines, the chances that the remaining 25% would go it alone (kind of) and release a debut album that doesn’t sound three musicians short of band, content to wank for coins while singing Libertines karaoke until the threat of a reunion becomes reality are pretty slim. But despite John Hassall’s previous musical affiliations, Yeti’s debut long-player ‘The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales’, with a few exceptions, has hardly got a whiff of the Albion about it, neither is it made up entirely of Barat and Doherty hand me down’s leaving Hassall to sound every bit the talented musician he is. It is however almost inevitable that Hassall’s Libertine qualifications are occasionally betrayed, but it’s only minimal. Touches of Doherty’s brush are splashed across ‘Cant Pretend’ while the creeping bass-line malevolence of ‘Midnight Flight’ sung under the umbrella of a solitary film noir street lamp could, depending on your listening preference, come from either The Libertines, Dirty Pretty Things or Babyshambles; and of course the prime offender is The Libertines track ‘Sister Sister’ (sung originally by Hassall on the ‘Legs 11’ demo). But that’s about it and Yeti’s experience soaked, carefree innocence and cautionary wistfulness more than anything makes you wanna buy a six-pack, pick up an acoustic guitar and invite your mates round rather than relive those dreaded good old days. With no apparent axe to grind or cross to bear, Hassall and co embark largely on an exploration of halcyon fuelled beat pop, combining simple stripped back semi-acoustic structures with uncomplicated lyrics and unadorned daydream harmonies through ‘Obvious-Lee’, ‘Don’t Go Back To The One You Love’, ‘Til The Weekend Comes’ and ‘Jermyn Girls’. With song writing duties split between the group, four distinct yet complimentary styles permeate the album, but it’s through the smile inducing ‘Merry Go Round’, Mersey drenched ‘In Like With You’ and the foot-stomping barn dance sing-a-long ‘Shane Macgowan’ that the band seemingly find their feet. As the album progresses, it grows and flows in both character and confidence and although familiarity apparently breeds contempt, the album and especially the delicious ‘Never Lose Your Sense Of Wonder’ and established sound of ‘The Last Time You Go (6 Feet Under)’ sound more pre-washed than Sta-Prest. It might not be big or clever but ‘The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales’ is a damn fine album to kick back to and enjoy in all its undemanding and straightforward glory. By Huw Jones

| John and Marc Interview | 549 Tage her | |||
| Just over three years ago, former The Libertines bassist John Halsall confirmed that he was more than ready to move on and away from the wreckage of that compelling, but ill-fated venture. With help from Andrew Deian (guitar/vox), Graham Blacow (drums) and Marc Underwood(Formerly known as, Harmony Williams) (acoustic/vox) he strolled through a set of brisk, carefree country psychedelic lifted soft rock in support of Razorlight. Through the spirited Byrds-eque flight of ‘Never Lose Your Sense Of Wonder’, they had the potential anthem and carefree sense of melody. Since then things slowed down and it has taken over three years for their debut album ‘The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales’, to make it out into the public domain (released 09/06/08 on Get Up And Go Records). However, this adventuring troupe now seems more focused, their dynamic nature gives them the ability to keep afloat in the shark infested waters of our music industry. John Halsall and Mark Underwood, kindly take the time to look back, forward and to the side, giving an honest perspective on their trade and life in general. Oh, and you might see the odd reference to The Libertines scattered around here and there. When starting out with Yeti several years back, was it important for all of you to distance yourselves from previous projects? What would you say is the main ethos of Yeti? Marc: Well I certainly wanted to distance myself from Project X. I still feel bad about all those monkeys, fortunately Matthew saved a considerable amount of them. John I think this is for you? John: Yeah, it was important to show that we were nothing like The Libertines band by not wearing leather, not doing drugs and not being garage rock Marc: and not being famous. Jon: Yes. And that’s our ethos. Music is more important than being papped shooting up & throwing up. Your stand out track for me is one of your earliest numbers ‘Working For The Industry’. You manage to convey disbelief, disillusionment and use punk style lyrics that expose “The Man” and the drudgery of robotic working class life. However, you do so in a sparkling folk/blues-rock manner that merges the best parts of the sound of the Kooks and early The Byrds. What did you wish to achieve in writing this, is it a subtle protest against protest songs that get lost in anger and resentment? Marc: Do the Kooks have a best part? What is that, the bit before they play or the bit after they stop playing? Or the bit where they die in some propeller-in-face style accident? John: The music industry sucks ass. That is all. Your debut album, ‘The Legend of Yeti Gonzales’ is finally making it into the public domain. Has it been a frustrating road to its release? Given the fact that you seemed to have the momentum, profile and right sound to have released it several years back? How in your mind has Yeti changed since you started out? Marc: If we’d have released it a couple of years back it would have sold lots more. But it would have been pretty shit. John: It would have been entirely off the back of the Lib’s. So now we’re happily going to sell shed loads less copies to people, but to people who actually like us. And the music is better now. Nice and slow. We used to play too fast. One of your first full length tours was in support of Razorlight. It has been commented that Razorlight crowds’ like Oasis ones aren’t too open to support acts? Are John’s loyalties divided in the great public grudge between your old band-mate Pete Doherty and Johnny Borrell, or is it not worth give it any credibility to it? Marc: I do recall people shouting “fuck off” quite a lot. And stuff got thrown. But I blame that on our playing. If we were amazing they would have shut up and listened. We weren’t. John: What great public grudge? We were all out just the other night, they seemed fine. Would you ever tour with Razorlight again and would you tour with Babyshambles or Dirty Pretty Things in the future? Marc: No A topical question; are festivals a good or bad thing for music, as a lot of the time the line-up is dictated by bartering between event organisers and A & R companies, as oppose to a real effort to give exposure to up and coming artists? Marc: They’re a good thing for the bank account. The PRS is rather good for festivals. John: If people want to see up & coming artists they can. If people want to see a plethora of great bands in one place a festival affords this opportunity. You started the year with a lengthy tour. What do you want people to take out of a live Yeti show, how do you want to leave them feeling? John: We want them to spread the word. Feel happy. With all the talk of classic bands getting back together next year like The Smiths and The Stone Roses. Who would you pay to watch if they reformed? Marc: A1. No, Elvis. Yeah if Elvis reformed I’d go watch him. It would be like not as good, like reformed turkey, but still pretty great. Is Mark Ronson good or bad for music, or could you not really give a flying drum-beat about him? Marc: I guess he was good for the Zutons. I imagine that awful Winehouse cover made them more money than their two albums combined. And he should get himself a less pubescent girlfriend the dirty old man. If you could change just one thing about the modern music industry, what would it be and why? Marc: We’d turn everything down a little. By David Adair | ||||
